Winter is a defining part of life in the Poconos, and six ski areas serve the region — more options within a short drive than almost anywhere else on the East Coast. Here’s what each one actually offers, sourced directly from the resorts themselves, and which towns put you closest to the slopes.
Camelback Mountain Resort — Tannersville
The region’s biggest and best-known ski area: 39 trails across 166 acres, an 800-foot vertical drop, and 16 lifts, with 100% snowmaking and full night skiing. Camelback also runs the second-largest snow tubing park in the U.S. (over 40 lanes) and an indoor water park on-site. Located right in Tannersville — for buyers who want to be minutes from the lift, this is the town to look at first.
Blue Mountain Resort — Palmerton (Carbon County)
Blue Mountain holds Pennsylvania’s highest vertical drop at 1,082 feet, with 40 trails, roughly 15 lifts, and 46 tubing lanes. It sits just outside Monroe County in Carbon County, about 30 minutes from the Lehigh Valley — a realistic option for buyers in Monroe County’s southern and western townships who want the state’s steepest terrain within a manageable drive.
Jack Frost & Big Boulder — Kidder Township / Blakeslee (Carbon County)
Two mountains, one lift ticket. Jack Frost offers 20 trails and a 600-foot vertical drop; Big Boulder offers 18 trails and a 475-foot drop, with a heavier focus on terrain parks. Both are located near Blakeslee, close to Cresco and the Pocono Lake area — a natural fit for buyers already drawn to that quieter, more wooded part of the county.
Shawnee Mountain Ski Area — East Stroudsburg
A family-owned, family-focused mountain with 23 trails, a 700-foot vertical drop, and 9 lifts across 125 acres, plus a dedicated tubing park. As the Pennsylvania ski area closest to the New York and New Jersey metro areas, it’s often the first in the region to open for the season. Located right outside East Stroudsburg, next to the Delaware River.
Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain — Lackawaxen (Pike County)
A smaller, family-oriented mountain with 18 trails and a 650-foot vertical drop, located within the Masthope Mountain Community in Pike County, just north of Monroe County along the Delaware River. Community property owners receive a season pass as part of their annual dues — worth knowing if a Masthope-area property is on your radar.
Choosing a Town Based on Skiing
If skiing is a top priority, proximity matters more than most buyers expect — a 15-minute drive on a clear day can become a very different commute in a snowstorm. Tannersville puts you closest to Camelback; East Stroudsburg puts you closest to Shawnee; Cresco and the Pocono Lake area put you within easy reach of Jack Frost and Big Boulder.
